Locally designed fundraising course offers a pathway to formal fundraising qualifications

A new, comprehensive course for New Zealand fundraisers is now open for registrations. Pathway to Fundraising Excellence, designed for local conditions by one of New Zealand’s leading fundraisers, will upskill charity workers in best practice fundraising and advance the career paths of existing fundraisers.

Course designer and presenter, Heather Newell, MComms, CFRE and Fellow of the Fundraising Institute of New Zealand, says “the new course blends theory and best practice in the New Zealand setting, using local case studies.” Previous courses have been adapted from overseas presentations. “This is the first time a New Zealand course of this intensity has been designed from scratch,” said Heather.

Over her 25 year career in the fundraising sector, Heather has trained hundreds of fundraisers and is one of the few New Zealand based fundraisers with the internationally recognised accreditation Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE). “The numbers of New Zealanders achieving the CFRE certification in recent years has dropped, and so this course is providing a pathway for fundraisers to upskill and work towards professionally recognised qualifications. Students completing the course achieve education points towards their CFRE accreditation.

With no existing formal qualifications for fundraisers available in New Zealand, the CFRE accreditation represents an important tool for charity employers to recognise those who have achieved the top standards in fundraising ethics and performance. “Not only is the course designed to prepare people for achieving CFRE, it is also a stepping stone for existing fundraisers to advance their careers within the charity sector.”

The charity sector is an important contributor to GDP with revenue of $17B and employs 4.4% of the total workforce. Fundraisers are a key resource for the sector, but with little formal training available locally, their contribution is largely unrecognised.

The first intake of participants is in November 2018 for part one, and participants will come together again at the end of January 2019 for part two.
